Theory Practice Sessions (TPS) are for sailors of any level eager to practice skills found in RYA Comp Crew, Day and Coastal Skipper qualifications, both theory and practical. The sessions are ideal both for sailors who have just done a qualification and are eager to embed the skills and for sailors working towards a coming certification, or for sailors of long standing who feel a bit rusty.
There are no qualified tutors for the TPS: sessions are group-led based on the practice needs of the participants. There is usually an element of theory discussion in the clubhouse followed by checking it in practice on the yachts.
Topics covered in the past have included:
Man Over Board recovery under sail and short handed
passage planning exercises
anchoring and recovering under sail
spinnaker work
night sailing
creating a deviation card in practice
taking a fix in practice
calculation of tidal streams and testing with a Course to Steer
springing off pontoons to combat adverse wind and prop-walk
WOBBLE
Secondary ports
heaving-to in practice and its uses
Once all participants have booked on to a coming session, they are sent an email with a suggestion / question for topics that might be covered on the day.
Sessions are open to members of PEYC and to those of PEWS.
